Samburu Elephants

Elephants are fascinating not just because they are much larger than you would expect them to be, their development and behavior is strikingly similar to that of humans.

Other mind-boggling elephant facts relate to their distinctive physical features, lifespan and even food.

The best places to see plenty of wild African elephants in Kenya are Tsavo, Amboseli, Masai Mara and Samburu wildlife parks.

  • Tsavo National Park is the largest of the Kenya national parks and is also home to the largest elephant population in Kenya.

The Tsavo elephants - which number about 12,000 - are also famous for their red coloration. So a Tsavo safari will reward you with surreal sights of red elephant herds - thanks to the red volcanic earth of the park.

  • Amboseli National Park is often fittingly referred to as "Elephant Country." This is because it is known to have the largest-bodied and highest concentrations of elephants.

As a bonus, you get to view the largest land-based mammal against the enormous backdrop of the Kilimanjaro, the highest freestanding mountain in the world.

  • The Masai Mara National Reserve, which is regarded by many to be the most thrilling wildlife sanctuary in Kenya is home to a sizable number of elephants. The Mara elephants are particularly easy to spot owing to the reserve's open grasslands and scattered shrubs.

But your views of elephants will be competing with those of other charismatic Kenya Animals such as the African lion, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos and millions (!) of wildebeest.

  • In Samburu National Reserve in Northern Kenya, several elephant herds can be seen swimming across the Ewaso Ngiro River.

If you want to take some baby elephant pictures and generally get up, close and personal with orphaned baby elephants, be sure to make a date with David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
