Haandi Nairobi - North Indian Cuisine at its Very Best

Haandi Nairobi, which specializes in North India cuisine, has consistently been rated one of the top Nairobi restaurants by independent travelers. My husband would certainly vouch for this as it is his favorite restaurant.

A fascinating feature is the restaurant's trademark clear glass windows. Although the intention is to show off the chefs' skills, these windows equally serve to work up the diner's appetites.

Located in The Mall in Westlands, Haandi Nairobi offers a generous range of tandoors, curries (vegetarian, chicken, mutton, fish and sea food), rice and naans...

We loved our dishes so much the first time, we order the same food each time. We start off with poppadums followed by some tandoored chicken tikka platters. We then crown our meal with the mild chicken makhani curry with vegetable fried rice as well plain and buttered naans. Occasionally, the kids are able to smuggle in a plate of chips.

Some of the dishes have quite a bit of chilly so if you have ulcers or just don't relish hot food, be sure to crosscheck your choice with the waiter.

Haandi also offers a selection of unique Indian drinks, such as jeera, which is a refreshing cumin and mint drink and sweetened, salted or masala-flavored homemade yoghurts. I looove their red fruit punch which includes pieces of diced fruit but their passion fruit juice - which my children love - is also excellent.

Customer Reviews

This section highlights what customers liked and disliked about the Haandi Restaurant Nairobi.

Customers Liked

  • Great, cheerful and attentive staff.

  • Fresh, delicious food. Customers consistently rave about Haandi's excellent food whether it is vegetarian, chicken, mutton, seafood or naans.

  • The restaurant's air-conditioning is a welcome respite from the city's heat in the warmer months and the ambience warm and inviting.

  • The communal dining theme. Food is served on platters or pots which are placed in the middle of the table for sharing. So, you can share the Haandi experience with friends and family in 2 literal senses.

  • Generous portions.

Customers Disliked

  • The food is pricey so it probably not the best place to dine out if you are counting the pennies.

  • The décor has not been changed in a while so it is a bit dated.

Summary

While you cannot eat at Haandi Nairobi regularly because the meals are both pricey and heavy, it is certainly well worth visiting for a special treat.

Obviously, the best of the Nairobi restaurants gets quite busy frequently. So, to avoid being turned away or waiting for a table for ages, be sure to call and reserve your table well ahead of the special occasion.
