The Intercontinental Hotel Nairobi is part of the Intercontinental chain of hotels and resorts so it is one of the big brand Nairobi hotels.


It is located in the heart of the city on City Hall Way just off Uhuru Highway and overlooks the Uhuru gardens. The popular Nairobi tourist destinations such as Nairobi National Park, Nairobi National Museum, David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the Giraffe Center are within a short driving distance of the hotel.

If you're flying into the Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, you'll undoubtedly be landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the largest of the Kenya airports, which is a short (about 15 minutes when the roads are clear) taxi ride from the hotel.

Accommodations

The hotel is designed to meet of the needs of both the discerning tourist and the business traveler. To this end, it offers 3 levels of accommodations spread across six floors. These comprise 376 guest rooms, executive rooms and suites.

When you book an executive room, you can bypass the reception and check in right next to your room on the sixth floor. All but approximately 60 of the rooms are non-smoking but to avoid disappointment, be sure to specify your preference with your booking.

Standard features in all the room include a private bath, satellite/ cable TV, a mini bar and workstation. The rooms are also decorated tastefully in a relaxed, contemporary style.

1 room has disabled accessibility so less mobile guests can feel at ease and look forward to enjoying the room's facilities to the fullest.

Services and Amenities

Staying at the Intercontinental Nairobi entitles you to a wide range of special services.

  • A health and fitness center which comprises a gym, spa, Turkish bath and outdoor swimming pool. Access does however attract an additional fee.

  • Business travelers may appreciate the staffed modern business center that can provide assistance with courier services, photocopying, surfing the internet and even booking a limo. These services of course attract an additional fee over and above the room rate.

  • Guests can also exchange their currency at the hotel although the rates will not be as competitive as what forex bureaus offer.

  • The babysitting services give you much needed time off to run errands, go shopping or dine out with the assurance that a trusted person is watching over your baby or children.

  • For those who want their laundry done in a hurry, the hotel provides same-day dry cleaning services. If you have some free time though, you can opt to use the hotel's self-service laundry facilities. These give you the option to do all your washing, drying and ironing in a cheap and organized way.

  • The Intercontinental Hotel Nairobi is home to several world class restaurants. The Terrace serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as buffets throughout the day. La Prugna d'Oro serves classic Italian food while the Bhandini serves excellent Northern India cuisine.

    Guest can also unwind in the Safari Bar, which besides offering a number of delicious cocktails, hosts several themed music nights such as jazz, karaoke, salsa, and blues.

What Guests Liked


  • The hotel is security conscious. All vehicles entering the hotel grounds are carefully inspected at the barrier and there are security personnel on each floor.

  • The concierge are particularly helpful and will go out of your way to make your stay in Nairobi hassle-free. The masseurs and masseuses are also very professional.

  • The rooms are spacious, comfortable and have air con. They are also well-equipped with a mini-bar, safe, iron and reading desk.

  • The Intercontinental Hotel Nairobi's central location is a huge plus. Because it is located within the city center, most of the government departments and the Kenyatta International Conference Center are within walking distance so there is really no need to spend your precious money hiring a cab.

  • The restaurants serve great food which infuses elements from all the major world cuisines. So, because all the culinary tastes are catered for, you will not be at a loss when deciding what to eat.

  • Good recreation facilities. The gym has modern treadmills and both the swimming pool and spa are well-maintained.

What Guest Disliked

  • The hotel is expensive so if you are "counting your pennies," do check out the more affordable Nairobi hotels.

  • Many of the hotel facilities need a makeover. The furnishings and steam room are old and the spa room urgently needs to be re-equipped.

  • The check in and check out processes are inordinately slow so do allow plenty of time.

  • The internet is slow and overpriced.

  • Some of the room bookings are occasionally mixed up and some of the rooms pricing muddled and it takes a while for these to be sorted out.

Summary

The Intercontinental Nairobi which has been in existence for over 4 decades, is one of the 5-star Nairobi hotels. From the business traveler's perspective, its location in the heart of the city gives it an edge over its competitors.

The hotel places due emphasis on security and the rooms are spacious, stylishly furnished and well-equipped.

If you are a prospective business traveler who places a huge emphasis on hotel location, the Intercontinental Hotel Nairobi will probably be your best choice.
