Lake Nakuru Lodge is Nestled in Flamingo Country

Lake Nakuru Lodge is a good base to experience the wildlife in Lake Nakuru National Park as it is located within the park.

Lake Nakuru National Park FlamingoesThe game lodge is a 2-hour drive on good paved roads from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya or a few minutes' chartered flight to the park's airstrip.

The lodge blends into the environment with its traditional African décor and offers commanding views over the park and Lake Nakuru that it encircles.

Guests will immediately feel at home in the lodge's relaxed atmosphere. Its grounds contain tropical plants, flowers and even acacia trees which host visiting baboons and Vervet monkeys from time to time.

Activities

The host of activities available from Lake Nakuru Lodge include the following:

  • Game drives in Lake Nakuru National Park. As well as monkeys, the park's other inhabitants include the African lion, leopards, monkeys, warthogs, buffaloes, waterbucks, zebras, gazelle.

The park is also largely credited with bringing back the Rothschild giraffe and the black and white rhinos from the brink of extinction.

  • Birdwatching. With over 400 species of birds catalogued in the park, it is an ornithologist's dream and is the best place to see those famous lesser and greater flamingos, pelicans and several other Kenya birds.

  • Picnicking. The best (and safest!) spot for picnicnking is the Baboon Cliff which provides spellbinding panaromic views of the alkaline Lake Nakuru.

  • During the evening the lodge offers both informative talks and slide shows on the local fauna and flora.
  • The lodge's Kenyan traditional music and dance shows - where guests are welcome to join in - are particularly memorable and offer an exciting peek into the Kenya culture.

Accommodations

Guests can choose from a range of African-themed accommodations each of which comes with a private bathroom:

  • The standard and family rooms are furnished with rustic African furniture, and have mosquito nets over the beds.

  • The cottages are more homely.

  • The suites have a more modern, luxurious touch and guests can look forward to sleeping in a beautifully carved four poster bed.

Services and Amenities

Lake Nakuru Lodge offers a range of services and amenities to help its guests relax after a long day.

  • The lodge offers 2 bars. Mana Nikki Bar is an informal meeting point for friends old and new. Just like the animals down at the waterholes, guests can quench their thirst whilst admiring the spectacular scenery around them. Guests can also try out the Rhino Paddock Bar upstairs which overlooks the pool.

  • The lodge guests dine buffet style on Kenya food and international cuisine specially prepared by the hotel's team of chefs. While the scrumptious spit roast barbecue is the highlight of many an evening meal, the lodge also offers some impressive vegetarian culinary delights.

  • The freeform swimming pool with sweeping views (over the park, of course!) is great for a dip after a long and dusty game drive.

  • Laundry service although this costs extra.

  • Should you run out of Kenya currency, you can get hold of some at the foreign exchange desk, albeit at uncompetitive rates.

  • The gift shop is a great place to pick up a Kenyan keepsake, particularly if you wont have time to visit of the cheaper Masai markets in Nairobi or Mombasa.

What Guests Liked

Location. Rooms. Staff. Hear it from the horse's mouth:

"Spectacular view!"

"The lodge is located in a really fantastic position in the park. We saw more than 10 rhinos during our stay and we only had to drive 20 minutes from the lodge!"

"The grounds were lovely, the swimming pool was a good size and we especially liked the restaurant overlooking the Hippo Pool."

"We had a superior room with the most wonderful view from the balcony out across the grasslands and over to the lake... it was definitely the most spectacular room of our safari. The good size bathroom also had a nice shower."

"Our room was the largest of all the three lodges we stayed in during our week-long safari. It had a wall of glass and sliding doors that led you onto the deck. And the views were amazing."

"The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and they tried really hard to ensure we had a comfortable stay."

What Guest Disliked

Range of food and overpriced wine. Over to the guests...

"I was turned away from the restaurant because I was wearing calf-length linen trousers, so remember to pack some long trousers for the evening."

"The food wasn't as mouth-watering as some of the other places we stayed at and was a bit of a disappointment as there wasn't much choice."

"At £25, the house wine is totally overpriced."

Summary

Probably the richest wildlife park in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park offers a wonderful combination of birds and animals. Since the lodge is located in the heart of this park, its guests are never far from some eclectic wildlife action.

Lake Nakuru Lodge is therefore a good place to stay for a night or 2 exploring the park's wild inhabitants.
