Nairobi Tourist Destinations

The Nairobi Attractions Offer Diverse Encounters with Wildlife, Culture and History

The Nairobi tourist destinations are bound to enchant every visitor to the capital. If, like me, you like to explore a city, you are bound to be spoilt for choice because there's plenty to see. Sample this...

  • At the Giraffe Center, you will feel privileged to stand shoulder to shoulder with the world's tallest animals.

And, by visiting the Giraffe Center, you will support the noble cause of bringing the severely endangered Rothschild Giraffe species back from the brink of extinction.

  • Nairobi Tourist DestinationsThe David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust runs a nursery for orphaned baby elephants and rhinos.

Here, you are bound to empathize with the founders' noble intentions to give these adorable creatures their only real shot at life.

The elephant calves are hand-reared for 2-4 years before being translocated to Tsavo National Park...

There, they are acclimatized to the wild for 6-8 years until they feel comfortable to wander off on their own.

  • For only $50 a year, you will also have an opportunity to foster an elephant calf of your choice.

  • You will likely be`dazzled by the Nairobi National Park, where a 100+ square kilometers of prime city land is carved out as a wildlife habitat.

The animal species that can be seen here include the Big Five (minus the Elephant which would require a lot more space to roam), giraffes, zebras and servals.

  • At the Mamba Village, you will witness several thousand crocodiles jostling for a piece of decomposing flesh.

This is also a good place to go camel and horse riding and is one of the popular Nairobi tourist attractions.

  • You will watch rescued lion cubs, leopards and monkeys up close at the Nairobi Animal Orphanage and from a fairly close range at the adjacent Nairobi Safari Walk.

You can also touch the cheetah at the safari walk and witness lions tearing at their meat from less than a foot away. The orphanage and safari walk provide a good foretaste of a wildlife safari.

  • If you want to experience the vibrant Kenya culture but don't have to time to visit an upcountry homestead, be sure to make a date with the Bomas of Kenya.

Different aspects of the local culture such as traditional villages, crafts, music and dancing are showcased at this Nairobi Tourist Destination.

  • The Nairobi Arboretum is a 74 acre green park located round the corner from State House.

It is a good place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy your picnic under the touching canopies of more than 350 species of indigenous trees and exotic plants.

You can also unwind here in the welcome company of a sizeable population of Vervet and Sykes monkeys and profuse birdlife.

  • Nairobi Tourist DestinationsIf you want to put Nairobi's rich culture into perspective, be sure to visit the several museums located in the city.

The Railway Museum displays numerous steam engines and locomotives that snaked their way along the Kenya-Uganda Railway, some over a century ago.

Karen Blixen Museum is actually the former home of Karen Blixen who wrote "Out of Africa" that was later turned into a best-selling movie.

The Nairobi National Museum displays several impressive archeological discoveries that "confirm" Kenya as the Cradle of Mankind.
